When changing the thermostat is it a must to?

put sealant on the gasket? Or do you even put sealant on a gasket? And about how much do you use? I just took off the thermostat housing and there was no thermostat in there. I guess that's why it always ran cold. So Im not positive how the thermostat goes in the housing. Should the spring part be facing down, away from the upper radiator hose? The car is a 1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.5 liter.When changing the thermostat is it a must to?Ok.. the thermostat spring portion should be positioned so it's inside the engine block. It's really the only way it can go in.

If the gasket is paper material, then DEFINETELY use a gasket sealer on both sides. If you don't, you run the risk of a leak and get to do the job all over again.

IF the gasket is rubber, you put nothing on it. If the gasket is an o-ring only, you put nothing on it.

ONLY if it's a paper gasket.When changing the thermostat is it a must to?The spring faced downward.

The upper half of the housing is likely too small to accommodate the thermostat if it's improperly installed.

Use only a gasket, no sealant ever.When changing the thermostat is it a must to?the spring goes towards the engine, the pointed end goes towards the radiator,and you probably wont have to use a sealant on the housing if its in good shape,it never hurts though to check it and add some if needed,i usually don't have to use it on those car though they seal up pretty good,good luck.When changing the thermostat is it a must to?Dodge man and eric are right, and no sealant if gskt is rubber and if you used paper yes sealant and use a thin amount both sides. You don't want excessive sealant getting into the thermostat

Good Luck

Why does the heater in our home turn on automatically even though we haven't touched the thermostat?

Our heater turned on unexpectedly in the middle of the night last night and would not shut off even after we made sure it was set to Off. We then hit the Reset button and it still didn't turn off, causing us to have an extremely hot evening.

It did the same thing today and turned on unexpectedly. After making sure it was on Off and hitting the Reset button, the heater still continued to operate. We then removed the battery from the thermostat in that room. The heater still stayed on!

We have Robertshaw digital thermostats in our home and have separate heating for both the upstairs and downstairs.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how to resolve this issue. How much should it cost to get a thermostat installed?

My car doesn't heat well and I bought a $10 thermostat but I don't want to get over charged.How much should it cost to get a thermostat installed?You have to drian and refill the coolant, most cars take about 40-80 dollars in coolant alone, but the job itself only takes less than an hour. You will probibly get hit for a disposal fee for the old collant also.

170 dollars to do everything shoudl be the highest you shoudl have to pay, this includes the part and the gasket.How much should it cost to get a thermostat installed?They should be able to change it in about 1/2 hour. ( Don't pay more than 1 hour labour)How much should it cost to get a thermostat installed?HI

On top of the 1hr labor there going to charge you for new anti-freeze. and a gasket

good luck

timHow much should it cost to get a thermostat installed?depends on the vehicle and shop labor. no matter what you're going to pay the book amount of time on the specific task at hand. say it's 1 hour book at $70 labor. you'll pay $70 weather it takes him all day or 10 minutes. shops go off the book and not hourly on what they charge for the job.How much should it cost to get a thermostat installed?An hour is ok to get it fixed.How much should it cost to get a thermostat installed?You did not say what kind of car you have . Every car is different and the hour labor might be basic . If you want a better answer you have to say what kind of car and year ?How much should it cost to get a thermostat installed?As others have said, there is also anti-freeze and the gasket.

anti-freeze you don't lose a lot to change this, really unless you are already low it won't need any or just a little.

The gaskets are just like $2 - $5.

I can't really help you more. You didn't give the car as this job varies a lot.

I have done it to a chevy caviler and a Chrysler Lebaron. Both very easy, just two or three blots on the top of the engine and that is it. The chevy had two gaskets but the Chrysler had only one also.

Then I have also did it on a pathfinder. This takes work, It is behind the belts and the fan. You have to take the fan off, the belts have to start coming off just to get to it.

Expect to pay more if its not easy (like how this one is).

Also, for the price they are going to charge, you can buy the tools and do it yourself cheaper. It is standard tools only.

I do recommend getting the gaskets, they help a lot. If you can't get them, you can get things that make gaskets but you have to be careful with these and they are more work. (again the pathfinder didn't have a gasket we could get so that was a pain)

If you do decide to do this yourself, or have a friend or relative do this for you, it is easy to find where the thermostat is. Just follow the hoses from the radiator (usually the upper hose) to where it is on the engine. You should just see a housing with a few bolts holding it on.

If you do take it to a shop expect an hour to 2 hours charge (depending on the car). To save money, you can try to find a local place where people learn to fix cars. They will usually be pretty cheap (since it is students doing the working), but they should be watched by he instructor so it should still be fine. I wouldn't do anything like this for transmission or internal engine though, I do have a limit to how much I trust them (or any shop in general really).

Sorry this is so long, just wanted to give you a lot of info.

How difficult is it to upgrade a room thermostat and or heating timer controls to digital types?

My current thermostat is a click type.

My heating/hot water timer control is a clockwork type.How difficult is it to upgrade a room thermostat and or heating timer controls to digital types?very easy..just follow directionsHow difficult is it to upgrade a room thermostat and or heating timer controls to digital types?it hooks up the same way it is not hard at allHow difficult is it to upgrade a room thermostat and or heating timer controls to digital types?Most new thermostats have infrared beams to send to a receiver (attatched to yur boiler) So if they are in sight of each other then that should not be problem at all.

Now if you detatch your timer from the wall , there will be a set of wires connecting the timer to the boiler / heating unit. The new digital one will use the exact same set of wires.How difficult is it to upgrade a room thermostat and or heating timer controls to digital types?I agree, it is very easy. The new digital t-stats come with easy to read instructions. You can take the old ones to the local hardware store, with a diagram of where the wires went, example-yellow wire going to a, blue wire going to t, etc. With that info the hardware associate will be able to help.How difficult is it to upgrade a room thermostat and or heating timer controls to digital types?No difference in the wiring, just the workings of the equipment. • How do you go about installing a new thermostat in a car?

    I have a 2003 chevy blazer and i need to install a new thermostat in my car. I was wondering what is the process on how to do this?How do you go about installing a new thermostat in a car?follow the upper radiator to your engine.

    Where it stops take that part off.you may have to take other parts before you can get to the part.

    so break out the digital camera and start shooting.helps to remember where to put the parts back in the right places.How do you go about installing a new thermostat in a car?The Thermostat is under the Thermostat Housing..usually made of aluminum..

    This type of a material requires exact mating of the surfaces..or it might crack a bolt(hold down)..

    The top radiator hose leads to the Thermostat Housing..

    Because the Thermostat is at the TOP-of-the-Motor..you can just place a Catch-Pan under the motor..some anti-freeze will get lost..be prepared to TIE-the radiator hose upwards..and out of the way..

    ===

    Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat housing..this assures a complete alignment--once you've placed the thermostat in its seating..and apply a gasket and gasket sealer..

    ===

    A good thermostat will have a Bleeder Hole..I have had to install a thermostat without a Bleeder Hole..and removed it..drilling in a very tiny bleeder hole..like 1/16 of an inch..//radiator STOP LEAK--may cause a block at the Bleeder Hole..

    ===

    So..just pull the old thermostat

    Replace its gasket and use a Gasket Sealer(shellac)..or Permatex{tm}Brand gasket sealer..I like the HARD-setting..//

    ===

    Be sure of an exact fit(matched surfaces)..or you'll snap a bolt hold down..

    ===

    You may want to use a File-edge to clean the surfaces also..just scrape the surfaces..[end]How do you go about installing a new thermostat in a car?follow top radiator hos eback to top of motor remove hose remove housing two bolts lift pretty much same on every car made

    Should the thermostat be connected to the upper radiator hose or the lower hose or does it make a difference.?

    I've had the same problems with my car overheating and I've tried everything and nothing worked I mean nothing. Cars running fine without the thermostat how must time do I really have.Should the thermostat be connected to the upper radiator hose or the lower hose or does it make a difference.?Upper radiator hose. That is where the coolant flows into the engine. If the car runs fine with-out the thermostat, maybe you need a new one.

    It's easy to check and see if the old one is working properly. Dro it into a pot of boiling water. If it doesn't open up you need a new one.Should the thermostat be connected to the upper radiator hose or the lower hose or does it make a difference.?upperShould the thermostat be connected to the upper radiator hose or the lower hose or does it make a difference.?You can run without a thermostat, but oyu should letthe car warm up to operating temperature before you start driving it or maybe block off air to the radiator a little bit in cold weather.

    In my race cars we run no thermostat to maximize water flow and cooling. The thermostat is usually in the filler neck of the upper radiator hose on most vehicals and it is a simple mechanicial part that is disposable. They arent that expensive or hard to replace.Should the thermostat be connected to the upper radiator hose or the lower hose or does it make a difference.?upper and yes it makes a difference if it was supposed ot be lower and it was connected o upper then the coolant would be flowing to the radiator at all times but only returning when the engine got hot

    now when it is on the top the same coolant is in the engine until it heats up so you are saving fuel because when your car is cold it runs rich to heat it up faster so if it heats up quicker it can save fuel
