How hard is it to install a different thermostat?

My house is nearly 60 years old and has one of those in-the -floor heaters. The thermostat thing in the living room is broken and you can turn the heater on and off, but it will not shut itself off when it gets too hot or turn itself on when it gets too cold; it's 100% manual.

Will replacing this part make the heater come on %26amp; off automatically, or is the problem somewhere else? The terminals on the old and new t-stat should be the same so simply power down your system at the breaker and swap wire for wire. Turn your breaker back on and then set your heating and cooling setpoints and your done. The only problem you may encounter is if the new t-stat doen't fit exatly where the old one was. Assuming it was, all you would have to do is turn off the breaker to the heater that is controlled by that particular thermostat. Doing this would essentially cut off power to the thermostat preventing you from being %26quot;bitten%26quot; by the electrical current. After turning off the breaker it is as easy as pulling the old one off of the wall, and attaching the new one as per the directions in the box.



The ones we have installed here can control up to two baseboards, so be sure you know whether or not yours is so you don't get %26quot;bitten%26quot; from the current of another unit.



The best way to know if the problem is somewhere else, in my opinion, is to go ahead and replace the thermostat and see if that fixes it. How much you spend is really up to you, as they range anywhere from $20-80.



My last word of advice is to take the old one with you so you can compare it to new ones or use it to get help from someone who works there. That's the biggest thing I've learned in this past year is to use as many people in the store as you need so that you know for sure you're getting what is best for your home.
