How can I switch from a manual thermostat to a programmable one?

I recently bought a programmable thermostat to replace my manual one, but the manual included didn't help. Calling for services would be my last resort, so please don't say %26quot;call the handyman.%26quot;How can I switch from a manual thermostat to a programmable one?basically see where the wires are on the old one.

i have a basic setup and my wires are:

R= red (hot 24 volts)

W= White (heating)

G= green or blue (blower)

Y= yellow (ac)

you could also go to the furnace unit and double check the wire designations at the control of the furnace. and that should put you on the right pathHow can I switch from a manual thermostat to a programmable one? There should only be a couple of wires to worry about.

Have you removed the manual one from the wall and looked at the wires attached to it (without disconnecting them)?

That should be your first step, after reading the instructions.

Make notes about how the wires connect now, so that you can reinstall the old thermostat if you can't get the new one working.

Then look back at the instructions and see if it all fits together better.

There should be the same number of wires in your wall as you have places to attach wires to the new thermostat.

Disconnect the old thermostat.

Hook the new one up. Be sure you have good connections on your wires.

Put in a battery if there isn't one in it yet

Set the temperature higher than the temperature of the air in the house

Go to your furnace and see if it came on.

Things may well make sense as you go thru this.

Assume you're going to succeed, not fail. (Very important!)

If it doesn't work, look at your connections and the booklet. Go to the internet and search on the thermostat brand/model you have to see if there are better instructions online.

Keep trying.

But don't lose the ability ot switch back to the old one.

Good luckHow can I switch from a manual thermostat to a programmable one?Hello Jon:

Step one: Turn off the furnace at the switch or at the circuit breaker. The thermostat runs off of 24 volts. If you cross the wrong wires, you could burn out the transformer. It only takes 1/120th of a second to do.

Step two: Remove the front cover(s) from your existing thermostat. The wires should be attached to screws with letters or numbers. Write down which colored wire goes to which screw. Do this before you remove the wires. Most common configuration (but not 100% of the time) R-red (power), Y-yellow (cooling), G-green (fan), C-blue (common), W-white (heat), O-orange(heat pump only). Depending on your system, you may have other wires like brown or black. These run accessories or sensors.

Step three: Remove the wires from the screws and then remove the old thermostat.

Step four: If you have lots of wire, cut back the current wire to the plastic insulation, then strip off 1/2 inch (2cm) of insulation. If you don't have any wire to spare, carefully inspect the old wire and clean up any corrosion, and cut away any damaged metal. Make sure there are no breaks in the wire.

Step four: Thread the wire bundle through the new base-plate of the new thermostat. Install the new base-plate ensuring that it is right-side-up. It will be mercury-free, so it does not have to be 100% level, but a level stat looks better.

Step five: Using the old guide, attach each wire carefully to the new baseplate. Use a bright light afterward to examine the connections and make sure that no wires touch each other.

Step six: Place the cover on the thermostat and turn on the furnace again. Set the temperature higher than the room temperature (at least five degrees higher). Walk to your furnace and check to see if it is operating. It may have a five minute delay. Some thermostats have a test mode, check your instructions.

Step seven: If the furnace operates, you can now program the thermostat using the instructions provided. If the furnace does not come on within 10 minutes, you will need to trouble-shoot the stat. Since you are asking how do hook it up, this may be out of your skill set.

  • How does the fresh air damper feature of a thermostat work?

I have a thermostat in my home with a fresh air feature that brings in air from the outside based on the outside temperature. How does it determine what temperature to use when opening the fresh air damper? How long does it stay open? How does the fresh air damper differential setting affect the fresh air damper function? The manual that came with the thermostat was of little to no help on this. How does the fresh air damper feature of a thermostat work? It's commonly called an economizer. When the temperature outside is cooler than the set point of the thermostat it will open the damper to assist your AC unit and save energy. It's most commonly used in commercial operations that require air conditioning inside even when it's 50掳 or below outside.

Just because you bought a thermostat with that feature doesn't mean your system is designed for it. Or did you actually take the thermostat from work?

How does a lower temperature engine thermostat affect performance?

I have a 97 Wrangler and i was wondering what type of thermostat i should get to increase performance. How does a lower temperature engine thermostat affect performance? The thermostat is designed to have your engine operating at the correct temperature for the engineering tolerances it was built to.

    Use the correct thermostat.

if your engine temperature is too low and you are not reaching correct operating levels you will wear out the engine and it will not perform properly.

If the temperature is too high you face the risk of thin oil and pistons seizure.

Who ever suggested that you can get better performance by changing to a non standard thermostat needs to go back to school. How does a lower temperature engine thermostat affect performance?Go by your manual. Too early opening of the thermostat can result in cooler coolant than normal, which would not keep the engine at optimal operating temperature. Conversely, too high a temp will also do the same. You can affect performance by other 'tweaks' more safe to do.How does a lower temperature engine thermostat affect performance? The lower temp thermostat will affect your emissions more than performance. Lowering the temperature of the intake air will effect greater performance. How does a lower temperature engine thermostat affect performance?A lower temperature thermostat improves performance because the engine will run cooler. In some cases that what is best but in the winter you want 195 rather than 160 or else you get much heat out of the vents .How does a lower temperature engine thermostat affect performance? If your thermostat is malfunctioning then a lower set temp will not give you actuall conditions. First check whether the thermostat fitted is compatible with your cars recommended temp limits.

Best of luckHow does a lower temperature engine thermostat affect performance? It should have a 195 degree thermostat. The engine is computer controlled. The engine must have this temperature to control fuel mixture properly. If you are looking to increase the horsepower look into increasing air intake and exhaust flow.Let her breathe.Don't forget,it's just a six cylinder.

How do we make sure our thermostat is getting power from the breaker box. how to check a breaker box?

Our heating / airconditioner quit working. they said to make sure the thermostat was getting power. I know how to check a fuse but how do you check a breaker? How do we make sure our thermostat is getting power from the breaker box. how to check a breaker box?A circuit breaker operates like a light switch, but a breaker is normally on its side. Its either ON or OFF, and it has a TOGGLE switch. Sometimes a breaker can %26quot;Trip%26quot; (meaning that something has occured to cause the breaker to turn itself off. Power surges, and too much current can cause this). You can identify these breakers by; opening the breaker panel box, and looking for the ones that have RED showing in a small window on the breaker itself. Each breaker has one. If you see RED. The breaker has Tripped. All you need to do is turn it off and back on. If the RED goes away, everythings good with that breaker. However, if the RED remains, the system that breaker controls has a short and the system must be checked by a professional.

How do I find out which thermostat will work with my heating/cooling system?

I've got a Ruud heating/cooling system with a heat-pump in my home. I want to install a modern digital, programmable thermostat. The dealer has some, not really what I want, at an outrageous price and will offer no advice. Lowe's and Home Depot have a wall full of them at good prices but nobody to tell me which ones will work and which ones will not.

Any advice? How do I find out which thermostat will work with my heating/cooling system?I had a Rheem. Ruud is the same company from what I can tell. I ended up with a Hunter thermostat that was specifically designed for heat pump systems. The main difference between a heat pump thermostat and the others, seems to be the heating/cooling reverser and the presence of an emergency heat mode. How do I find out which thermostat will work with my heating/cooling system?Yes they are all just temperature sensitive switches. If your geothermal system heats and cools you need the reverser. Check out http://geothermalservice.net

How do I find out which thermostat will work with my heating/cooling system? The best thing you can do before buying one is to look at your old thermostat and tell me which (color) wires you have connected to the terminals on your present thermostat. I will need to know each terminal's designation, i.e., Y, W, W2, G, O, B, etc. That will give me an idea which thermostat HD has that will work with your system. It would help to know the model number of your air handler and outside unit. How do I find out which thermostat will work with my heating/cooling system?First find out if you have Gas, Electric or Heat Pump.

When you find out...go to Home Depot and buy the correct one and it will tell you exactly how to wire it up on the inside. How do I find out which thermostat will work with my heating/cooling system? It is really pretty easy. Buy a regular heat pump thermostat. The difference is whether the reversing valve is energized in heating or cooling mode. IF its energized in cooling, there will be a wire on the O terminal, if its energized in the heating mode, there will be a wire on the B terminal. The other wires will be standard. Just swap the R, G, Y, W1, W2, E wires to the new stat from the old stat. I believe Ruud uses the B terminal, but you can verify by looking at your existing stat. Be sure to turn off the power to the inside and outside unit. If you accidently touch the R and C wires, you can blow the transformer and you have to have an AC guy come out to repair it.

How does a 2 wire 24 volt ac electronic thermostat work to control a gas fired furnace ?

Have moved into a house where previous owner replaced simple mechanical type thermostat (with mercury bulb) with an electronic unit. Mechanical type obviously just closes a contact to complete the gas valve circuit and so get 24V across gas valve coil.

Obviously 2 wire electronic unit cannot do this because the unit needs to draw power for the electronics.

The new thermostat is giving unreliable operation, am thinking of replacing it with the old unit which I found and appears to be functional (checked with multimeter). How does a 2 wire 24 volt ac electronic thermostat work to control a gas fired furnace ?you are correct, the electronic tstat needs to be powered, some cheaper thermostats will operate on 2 AA batteries(junk in my opinion) or the other will actually be powered from the 24 volts on the unit transformer, verify that its wired correctly, is this just a furnace or is there also a cooling unit with this system?

    heat only:

you should have 3 wires, one wire connected between Rh on unit and Rh on stat, one wire between C on unit and C on stat, and one wire between W on unit and W on stat.

the wires to Rh and C will power the stat, W is the open contact on the stat that will close when a call for heat has occured. How does a 2 wire 24 volt ac electronic thermostat work to control a gas fired furnace ?An electronic tstat works the same way a mercury bulb tstat works. A tstat is just a switch. The only difference is that a mercury bulb tstat uses mercury to complete an electric circuit. Voltage passes through safety limit switches to one side of the gas valve through the tstat mercury and back down to energize the gas valve.

On an electronic tstat the current still travels as stated above however, the %26quot;switch%26quot; is completed using a printed circuit board.

For the most part electronic tstats are considered morefficient, but you should chanfe the tstat if you're not happy with its operation.

How much can a digital thermostat save in energy per month?

In October I installed a 95% variable speed furnace, but have a 30 year old thermostat. My gas bills are still high! My gas company rep said she had the same thing happen to her, changer her stat to a digital and saved 100/month!!How much can a digital thermostat save in energy per month?this depends on what temp extreme your willing to set it at. you can save 10% of your heat bill by turning down the temp 8-10 deg at might. having it at 68-72 during the day when you are present.

the savings come from it automatically setting it down when you sleep. How much can a digital thermostat save in energy per month? That sounds like a very extreme case from your gas company rep. A dollar amount is impossible to state. But if you check out the website for the Honeywell Vision Pro 8000 they have some percentages that should help you.How much can a digital thermostat save in energy per month?First of all, the company that installed the new furnace should have included a digital thermostat. It will save you 10-15% on your bill with a programmable unit. It may be more since you currently have a mechanical thermostat. It is an easy diy project to replace. For more info, check out my source. How much can a digital thermostat save in energy per month? It will only save you money based upon how you program it

    I have ours programmed 6AM to 8AM - 70 degrees

    all other times 60 degrees

We use mattress pad heaters ( which are awesome )

so you're toasty warm while sleeping

and most of the other time we're at work so who cares

I want to be able to bypass the power vent thermostat so that I can turn the fan on manually during the winter. The thermostat only goes as low as 50 degrees. I need to be able to turn it on to keep the attic below 32 degrees in the winter. I don't want to eliminate the thermostat all together, because it will do its job fine during the hot summer months. How can I bypass a thermostat on a power gable vent?Shouldn't be too difficult, just open the box on the side of the fan and wire in a two-conductor Romex wire or MC (whichever you prefer) and down to a switch location of your choice.

Turn off power to the fan BEFORE doing any electrical work! How can I bypass a thermostat on a power gable vent?Do you have a switch on it now? You can add another bypass switch by running wires to either side of the switch and then connecting that to the switch. Turn it on to bypass the thermostate and off to let the switch function. good luck

How do I replace a line voltage thermostat with a 24-volt one?

Live in a condo complex with a very strange thermostat. It has two high voltage wires (not sure if 110v or 220v) going to a fan control (low/med/high) then from there, it goes to the thermostat (for both heat/cool). Trouble is, it's old, the know is very hard to turn and I would like to replace with a modern 24V thermostat. Had an AC guy out that said it can be done, but that I would need an electrician to add voltage transformers...says he had a system done and cost near $300. Can I do this myself? How? Or can I just buy a new line voltage thermostat? Trouble is, the ones I have found only do heat or cool, not both. How do I replace a line voltage thermostat with a 24-volt one?Go to a Plumbing Supply, Home Depot, Lowes, Sears or other home center and ask in the department that has preferably some experienced help. It would help to have as much information about the old thermostat as possible as there should be one that is a line voltage model as they are still made. They are not that expensive and it would be a lot more trouble to rewire for a new low voltage system. Since the condo already has a setup for the line voltage model, check around and get a licensed Electricians advice as that is more in his line of work and an Electrical Supply house carries a lot of different Thermostats too! Replacement %26quot;in kind%26quot; is cheaper, believe me.How do I replace a line voltage thermostat with a 24-volt one?the ac guy was ripping you off.if you have a thermastate now, then you have a transfomer,24 volts,i cant explane without seeing it,but call another ac company,i use to do that kind of work and there are alot of shady companiesHow do I replace a line voltage thermostat with a 24-volt one?Buy and install a new line voltage thermostat. Don't bother with the conversion. How do I replace a line voltage thermostat with a 24-volt one?Keep in mind that I am not a AC guy. I work in the electrical industry and have replaced a few low voltage thermostats. I am just using some funk logic here.

Here are your options. The first is to have the two line voltage thermostats next to each other on the wall. Not such a bad idea if you are afraid to dive into this mess.

The second option is a transformer. For starters, I would find out what your amperage draw is on that thermostat line (Probably not much at all). Then head down to your home store, like Home Depot and get a transformer for the required amperage at 120v transformed to 24v. You have wire the transformer in-line of the power cable, so (whether wire is in pipe or romex), you have to find a breaking poing (probably at the air handling unit / blower). The transformer will mount in a box or they have these %26quot;Box Transformers%26quot; that mount directly on the outside of an electrical box (also can buy at Home Depot). Then, use the wires that go to the thermostat to carry your 24volts. Just make sure to check the thermostat for the number of wires you need. Typically thermostats today have like 6 or 7 wire connections. If you just have a hot and neutral from power to the thermostat now, you won't have enough wire. You may want to consider fishing in a new multi-conductor wire back to the air hander / blower. How do I replace a line voltage thermostat with a 24-volt one?24 volt thermostats work off the transformer that comes installed in the appliance being used. The fan motor is dependent on the 120 for the variable speed. You would have to rewire the motor to work with a new control board for the same operation. Probably not worth the expense or hassle. They do make 120 stats that control both heat and air. Search on line for one if you can't find it locally. How do I replace a line voltage thermostat with a 24-volt one?Norm %26amp; krazykrau are steering you straight. The bulk of the people who answered your query are F.O.S. You'll find it much simpler (and cheaper) to stick with your line-voltage control circuit. Bite the bullet and have an HVAC contractor do it. Good luck. How do I replace a line voltage thermostat with a 24-volt one?The line voltage guys are right. Conversion would be folly. A new appropriately matched thermostat will work best and may be more efficient. Do your research and see if there may be %26quot;set back%26quot; stats that will allow you to customize your heat/cool settings to fit your home/wake/sleep schedule. How do I replace a line voltage thermostat with a 24-volt one?Transformer to reduce voltage, additional relay on evaporator air handler and boiler/furnace.

How do I check to see if my thermostat went out?

HVAC is a heat pump with a totaline thermostat. 7 yrs old. No power to the thermostat. How do I check to see if my thermostat went out?Not sure what you mean by no power to the thermostat. Did you actually measure the low voltage lines on the back side?

1)If you did then there is one more easy thing to check. Many gas furnaces power the thermostat circuit with a transformer mounted to the furnace, often the transformer is powered via a fuse mounted close by. I don't know if heat pumps are similar but if so, and in the unlikely event the fuse blew, its an easy fix.

2)If you have a digital thermostat with a display and the display shows nothing perhaps its the thermostat battery. I think Honeywell digital thermostats power their displays from battery power rather than low-voltage power. Not sure though. How do I check to see if my thermostat went out?No power to the thermostate, check the transformer for line voltage and low voltage

The repair manual you already bought didn't tell you this? I'd take it back. It has pages missing. How do you replace a thermostat in a 1998 diesel Chevy Suburban? If I remember correctly, it is located under the injector pump. To replace it requires removal of the injector pump. This is something that I wouldn't recommend trying to do on your own. The injector pump is the heart of that engine and if things are not put back together properly, it won't run.

Sorry about the bad news, but I don't want you to cause a bigger problem. I would recommend taking it to a certified diesel repair garage. If you decide to try and repair it yourself. My best siggestion would be to take you time, pay attention to every bolt, and make sure the engine timing is on Top dead center #1 before removing any injector pump components and mark the lines. Hope this helps and good luck. Christopher

I need to have the thermostat move to the 3rd floor. How can I change the thermostat that controls the heat in the house? If there is currently one thermostat it's safe to assume that there is only one furnace, correct? If this is the case there is no simple fix. For the units to have their own thermostats there must either be separate furnaces or be part of a zoned system. Creating a zoned system would mean installing electronically controlled dampers that will vary the amount of air sent to each unit.

If you just want to move the thermostat to the 3rd floor its no big deal. A wire just has to be run from the third floor to the furnace. Just remember that heat rises. If you set the temp at 72 on the third floor the first floor will be much cooler. How can I change the thermostat that controls the heat in the house? The thermostat is your zone control and when you place the thermostat, remember this. You can turn the thermostat up, the heating unit will run until that particular thermostat reaches the temperature you have asked for.

Why does my digital thermostat not keep temperature?

Ok, I bought a digital thermostat this past summer, I'd say about June. I worked great, I can't believe how much my bill went down. Up until about 2 weeks ago, it worked fine with the furnace as well. But now it suddenly stopped keeping the temperature. The furnace just runs constantly, and even if I switch the thermostat to %26quot;OFF%26quot; the furnace just keeps on running. I have to turn it off by using the breaker switch to cut off the power.

Does anyone have any idea why it would do this ? A loose wire or connection maybe? Is it possible the thermostat went bad so soon ? It's getting really annoying having to turn the breaker on and off. If I leave it on while I'm at work, I'm likely to come home and the house will be 86 degrees even when it's 30 outside. If I leave it off too long, then the house is freezing cold.

Any suggestions at all before I spend a fortune on a repair guy would be appreciated. The furnace itself is only about 4 years old.Why does my digital thermostat not keep temperature?could be a short in the thermostat wire. disconnect thr r wire on the t-stas. if furnace still runs disconnect the r wire at the furnace. if it still runs the furnace control board is badWhy does my digital thermostat not keep temperature?usually digital thermostats have batteries in it, check the batteries. if that is not the case unscrew it from the wall and u will see 2 to 4 wires attached make sure they are properly secured it that is not the case i would contact the manufacturer or call in a service tech

  • How do I stop my thermostat from controlling the whole house?

We've just had a new boiler fitted and had a thermostat added too. This thermostat has replaced the thermostat that was on the radiator in the back room but not all of the others around the house. However when the room the thermostat is in reaches the temperature set it stops all the radiators in the house from heating up leading to cold rooms elsewhere. How do I stop this?

Sorry if my description is not clear, i'm not very good with this sort of stuff. How do I stop my thermostat from controlling the whole house?fit each radiator with a thermostatic valve you then can control all room temperature and save moneyHow do I stop my thermostat from controlling the whole house?Thermostat needs to be moved to coldest room in house(Hallway is the norm).Either extend wiring %26amp; relocate stat or install a wireless type(From plumbers merchant),and place stat where you think coldest, but not in a room with another heat source like a fire or cooker as this will also shut heating down when rest of house is coldHow do I stop my thermostat from controlling the whole house? You move the thermostat to the room you occupy the most, usually the TV room. You can either extend the cable or fit a wireless room stat. The latter is the costlier solution but you then have the advantage of being able to move the receiving stat to the room of your choice as it is entirely portable. How do I stop my thermostat from controlling the whole house?I would call the company who installed your new boiler and tell them there is a problem. You may have to have the thermostat relocated. If the room the thermostat is in gets hotter than the other rooms in the house, it will shut off your thermostat. How do I stop my thermostat from controlling the whole house? Each individual radiator should have a knob on it that turns it up and down, if you can turn the one in the room with the thermostat down, then turn the others up full, that should keep them all on?

First set the temperature on the boiler, this should not exceed 60 degrees; infact the water from the boiler should be such that it is just uncomfortable to hold the pipe as opposed to just touching it. this is controlled on the boiler NOT the room stat.

then with room stat set to 20+ deg and all radiators with their regulator valves wide open touch each one they should be hot from top to bottom and they should all feel the same ( back of hand endurance test) see how long you can hold your skin against the radiator. If they are not all equal they then need balancing

To balance the radiators remove the plain cover on the lock shield valves and open them fully using either a spare regulator cap or an adjustable spanner. Then screw each radiators lock shield valve down a 1/2 a turn or more keeping the rads at the same temp, larger rads will require fewer turns than small rads, towel rails will require more turns. Once equal replace the lock shield, set room stat to ecconomical 18 degs then adjust each room for warmth by adjusting the regulator

How can there be two different thermostats for that? How do refrigerator/freezer combinations with dual-thermostat control work with regards to the pump?think of the two controls this way, one controls temperature of entire unit, like your house thermostat, and the other controls air flow from the freezer into the fridge, similar to your individual room vent controls.

Quick question on how thermostat relay wires work?

When you turn on the fan, does it just send 24 volts from the red wire to the green? And is that 24 volts constant the whole time? I have the fan on on the thermostat and i am testing the green wire at the fan base and there is not voltage coming through it.Quick question on how thermostat relay wires work?G is normally designated for the fan and yes there would be voltage as long as you have the the fan on switch on. How hard is it to replace my thermostat with a programmable thermostat?

I would like to replace my very old thermostat with a new programmable one. Is it really hard, can I do it myself, and is it really worth it?How hard is it to replace my thermostat with a programmable thermostat? It is very easy. There are only a few low-voltage wires. The thermostats come with very clear directions to mount it on wall and to customize the program for your own schedule.

If you use a big setback during the day when you are not home and at night when you are in bed (and a really low temperature for when you are on vacation) they will pay for themselves in a year. You also could get a major discount from your electric or gas company that makes it close to free to purchase. How hard is it to replace my thermostat with a programmable thermostat? No, its simple. if you need help , you can ask me before you fix.

contact me in my mail for more details/How hard is it to replace my thermostat with a programmable thermostat? No, it's really easy. Turn off the power (to be safe) using the circuit breaker, remove the old one, attach the new one. It's not a big deal. How hard is it to replace my thermostat with a programmable thermostat? It should be an easy set up. It depends on how many wires are coming from your furnace/ a/c unit. The terminals on the thermostat should read r, w,g, y, R is the power leg from your furnace- generally the red wire. W is the heating lead from your furnace, generally the white lead. G is the blower circuit - generally the green stat wire. and Y is the cooling lead- usually the blue or yellow wire.

The hard part is to program your t stat and that differes from stat to stat- just follow the directions in the instructions.

How does a thermostat in a refrigerator work?

Detailed please, but not too complex.

It is for biology class- we have to talk about negative feedback

So if you could please tell me how the thermostat works and how it controls the overall temp that would be amazing

Thanks :)How does a thermostat in a refrigerator work?It most probably uses a bimetallic strip to sense temperature, and closes a contact when the temperature goes above a set point. The closed contact turns on the compressor, which starts cooling the refrigerator. After a bit, the temperature goes low enough and the contact opens, turning off the compressor. This cycle continues.

negative feedback, from the top of my head, is a process where an error signal is amplified and used to control a process that decreases the error.

The error signal is the difference between the desired temperature and the actual temperature, which is sensed by the bimetallic strip and (amplified) used to control the compressor, which will decrease the error, ie, cool the frig.

A bimetallic strip is a long thin strip consisting of two dissimilar metals soldered or riveted together, and wound into a coil. Since the two metals have different thermal expansion properties, as the temperature changes the coil winds tighter or unwinds. This causes to contacts to close or open, like a switch or relay. You can see one of these in most room thermostats. How does a thermostat in a refrigerator work?My understanding is that it monitors the temperature inside the refrigerator, then when the temperature reaches a point higher than it is set at, it releases cold air into the fridge.

Anything more in depth is beyond me. Hope it helped! How does a thermostat in a refrigerator work?yeah what john said...doubleHow does a thermostat in a refrigerator work?Largely, bimetal strips are not used in refrigerators.

Usually, the thermostat is a capillary (very small) tube filled with a gas. This tube is then connected to a diaphragm. As the temperature in the fridge increases, the gas in the tube expands (PV=NKT) %26amp; pushes on the diaphragm, which in turn operates a set of contacts. These contacts will in turn, operate the compressor. How does a thermostat in a refrigerator work?A refrigerator thermostat is usually just an electrical switch connected to a mechanical device that responds to changes in temperature. As billrussell42 said, in his excellent answer to your question, this can be a bi-metallic strip that bends or winds or un-winds (depending on construction) as a function of temperature. The motion is opposed by a spring whose force is controlled by an attached knob that sets the desired temperature. A capillary tube connected to a diaphragm is another type of mechanical temperature transducer but the principle is the same. (Electronic sensors such as thermistors and thermocouples are also used, especially in laboratory refrigerators, but their use is considerably more complicated)

For mechanical thermostats, depending on the temperature setting, the force produced by a spring will determine when the switch opens or closes. When the actual temperature is below the “set-point” temperature, the switch remains open. When the actual temperature rises above the “set-point” temperature the switch closes.

Negative feedback occurs when the switch is wired to turn the refrigerator compressor ON if the actual temperature is ABOVE the “set-point” temperature and to turn the compressor OFF if the actual temperature is BELOW the “set-point” temperature. Note that turning the compressor ON causes the temperature to decrease. And vice versa: decreasing the actual temperature BELOW the “set-point” temperature will cause the compressor to turn OFF, thereby allowing the refrigerator temperature to gradually increase as outside heat seeps in past the insulation in the walls.

In other words, two opposite and competing effects determine whether negative feedback is in play. Increasing temperature causes a response (compressor turns on) resulting in a decreasing temperature. Decreasing temperature causes a response (compressor turns off) resulting in an increasing temperature. In a nutshell that is negative feedback.

For this type of ON/OFF negative feedback, an important concept called hysteresis must always be present. It is important that the temperature that causes the compressor to turn ON always be a few degrees higher than the temperature that causes the compressor to turn OFF. The difference between these two temperatures is called the “dead band” or hysteresis band. A dead band is very important to prevent “short cycling” where the compressor comes on in response to increasing temperature, but then almost immediately turns off because the temperature quickly dropped.

This means, of course, that the temperature in the refrigerator is never constant. It cycles between the dead-band limits. Industrial refrigeration gets around this problem by using a type of negative feedback called proportional control with integral and derivative feedback, but that is beyond the scope of this answer.

Imagine now what would happen if positive feedback were used. That is, wire the temperature-sensing switch in such a manner that increasing the actual temperature above the set-point temperature will turn the compressor OFF and decreasing the actual temperature below the set-point temperature will turn the compressor ON. Easy to do if it’s a single-pole, double-throw, switch, which is often common on bi-metallic thermostats.

There are two cases: initial temperature above the set-point temperature and initial temperature below the set-point temperature.

If the actual temperature is above the set-point temperature, and the compressor is already ON, it will immediately turn OFF. And it will remain OFF because we assume the temperature rises when the compressor is off.

If the actual temperature is below the set-point temperature, and the compressor is OFF, it will immediately turn ON. And it will remain ON as the compressor continues to make the actual temperature lower and lower than the set-point temperature.

Obviously neither condition is desirable, but then positive feedback in a control system is seldom desirable.

I hope this answer was detailed enough without being too complex.

  • How can I rig a furnace thermostat in my bedroom that shuts off a blower after the room cools down?

How can I rig a furnace thermostat in my bedroom that shuts off a blower after the room cools down?

I have installed a separate blower in the second storey of our house, but unfortunately it works so well it gets to cold at night.

I have an extra thermostat, I guess I now need a 25v transformer or whatever else to make this happen. This thermostat will be completely separate from the existing thermostat as it is doing a separate task. I need the room to reach a certain temperature and stay there. Programing a timer would not want to guess how the night air will do throughout the night. A thermostat is best. Any suggestions?

    Thank you,

VinceHow can I rig a furnace thermostat in my bedroom that shuts off a blower after the room cools down?Get a 24 volt relay and a 24 volt transformer. Wire the t-stat to turn on and off the relay. Wire the fan power lead through the switching contacts on the N.O. posts on the relay. The transformer will take 110 volts down to 24 volts and power the t-stat and then power the relay. The fan will turn on and off with the t-stat. Make sure you have the right configuration on the t-stat. A heat and cool t-stat will have several contacts on it. Use the R (or RC) and Y contacts. This will turn the fan off on temperature fall. R (or RH) and W will turn the fan off on temperature rise. Hope this helps!! Good luck! How can I rig a furnace thermostat in my bedroom that shuts off a blower after the room cools down?most likely you would have to install a thermister in your vent of your room or duct. How to wire thermostat for electric baseboard?

I have a 240 volt electric baseboard heater and trying to update my thermostat. Old thermostat has two wires, new thermostat has four wires, two of which are labeled load and other two labeled line. Could you explain how I wire the new one? What is difference between line and load? Thanks. How to wire thermostat for electric baseboard? If it's 240V., your heater has two 'phase` wires.

Your old thermostat only opened one of these

wires, interrupting the circuit, but leaving a live

    wire connected to the heater.

After this fried a 'DIY`er or two, it was required

that the thermostat interrupt both 'legs` of the circuit.

If the thermostat is part of the unit, just wire both

incoming wires to the %26quot;line%26quot; side, and connect two

wires of equal size with 'hi temp` insulation, (THHN,

THHW), to the heater from the %26quot;load%26quot; side. How to wire thermostat for electric baseboard?Do you still have the instructions that came with the thermostat? The line is the live wire (feed) and the load is coming from the baseboard. You have to look at the instructions as the thermostat is nothing but a switch to turn the heater on and off automatically. I would guess that one of the load wires is for the heater and the other from one leg of the feed and one of the line sides feeds the heater and the other connects to the line side. It is being switched and the line feed has to open and closeHow to wire thermostat for electric baseboard?Your old thermostat closed the electrical circuit on one 'leg' of the 240V circuit. The other 'leg' must have been connected directly to the heater. With your new thermostat, connect one 'line' wire to the wire coming from the breaker/fuse panel; connect one 'load' wire to the wire going to the heater. Your other line and load wires will not be required but marrette them individually to prevent any hazardHow to wire thermostat for electric baseboard? The line wires are the 2 wires coming from your fusebox. The load wires are the 2 wires coming from the heater elements, so just hook up accordingly. How to wire thermostat for electric baseboard? You need to determine if the baseboard heater is controlled by line voltage (220V) or if there is a transformer stepping the voltage down.

If you determine this then you will know how to wire the stat. Most thermostats do not switch the line voltage (too dangerous).

How do I get my thermostat to work right?

I've got a thermostat that operates a hot water fed furnace and central air plumbed throught that same furnace. Red and white wires will operate the furnace and fan. Yellow and green will operate the AC compresser and and the same fan in the furnace. The problem is when they are all hooked up at the same time. In AC mode things work fine. In heat mode, the thermostat calls for heat, then after a short delay the fan/blower comes on. At this point, the AC compressor also comes on so that I am heating/cooling in the heat mode. If I unhook the green/fan wire the heat mode will work fine and the compressor won't come on. The green wire is the fan wire which I checked by wiring directly to the red. The strange thing to me is the fan will work in the heat mode without the green wire attached. I assume that means the furnace is running the fan directly. Thanks in advance. How do I get my thermostat to work right?Look Red is your power

How far should a car thermostat go before it is unsafe?

My car recently started overheating and acting funny so I took it in and was told I needed to replace my thermostat and get my radiator flushed. I did both. The car has not overheated since then, but the thermostat on the dashboard goes up pretty high. It hasn't gone all the way to top to over heat, but it has been pretty close. It seems to go down when I go faster, but if I slow down at lights and such it creeps up high. I don't honestly know if I my car did this before and I am just being paranoid because I never paid any attention to it before.

Am I being paranoid? How high can the temperature gauge in the dashboard go before I should be worried? Any suggestions would be appreciated. How far should a car thermostat go before it is unsafe?not good dude, your not paranoid.

it could be a number of things like... bad water pump, or maybe the cooling fans are not operating,How far should a car thermostat go before it is unsafe?your thermostat should have heat rating 195 degrees probably. If it goes any higher its not good or you have another problemHow far should a car thermostat go before it is unsafe?could be your electric fan is not coming on, there is a thermo fan switch located in the rad on most cars , you actually refer to the temperature gauge as the gauge on your dashHow far should a car thermostat go before it is unsafe?sounds like your radiator is wearing out. The extra air flow when you're driving is what cools off the engine...that's the giveaway. I'd also check to see if your fan is working. How far should a car thermostat go before it is unsafe?Make sure you had the right thermostat replaced, there is a summer stat and a winter stat. newer cars only take one size. If it is installed backwards, it will give you trouble big time. I have seen mechanics put it in upside down, it will work but not very well.

Check your water pump, it may look and feel good but it may be slowly failing. The bearing and or bushings wear out Anything past 3/4's on the gauge on your dash, be worried. A low grade Antifreeze can cause it, check your hoses, upper and lower for softness or mushy, if they feel hard replace them, even tho you don't use the heater, check those hoses as well. Even tho you had the radiator flushed, it may be weak, I always replaced mine with a new one, not rebuilt. If you over heat you could blow the transmission and even burn up the engine, Always pay attention to all your gauges, they are there to warn you.

Thanks! How hard is it to install a digital thermostat? It is fairly easy. But make sure you buy a six wire unit if you have more then a one stage AC. Most are five wire, two for the heat (red and white) and three for a single stage AC (fan, compressor, and return path). Usually the digital programmable has a bracket plate that attaches to the wall using screws and plastic anchors, the wire are screwed into terminals on that bracket and the actual thermostat click onto the mounting bracket.

First off,,, a mercury thermostat is nothing more then an on/off switch to bring on the furnace, it works off of changing temperature warping a piece of bi metal Thu expansion and contraction,,, temp goes up, the mercury goes one way,,, temp goes down mercury goes the other way... depends on what position the heat/cool switch is in for the mercury to send power either to the furnace or the air conditioning... Second,,, since this is just a switch, it can still operate and not control at the temp you set it at if it is out of level or the bi metal is worn out ,,, you may have it set for 70 degrees and it will control at 65 degrees or 75 degrees,,,so don't compare with a another thermometer unless all you want to know is if it is controlling at the set point or not,, set the switch at heat and turn the dial to the highest setting and see if the furnace starts..third,, even if you turn it up and the switch is set to heat,, it could be the furnace that is not working and the thermostat is still doing its job,,,, I believe you need to call a qualified tech.. There should be a fan switch on the thermostat also,, this switch should say fan / auto set it to fan and see if the fan starts,, it it does we know the thermostat is getting power, in this case it probably will be a furnace problem,,,good luckAny idea how to tell if a thermostat for my gas furnace needs replaced?Does it work? would be the first question. If not, have someone that knows what there doing look at it.Any idea how to tell if a thermostat for my gas furnace needs replaced? The thermostat on a furnace that old operates by opening and closing the gas valve directly, it operates on a 24 volt system and should open and close within four degrees of the set point. (if your stat is set at 68 then it should turn on at 64 and off at 72) you can solve this by replacing it with a digital thermostat. You can do this yourself by turning the power off to the furnace and replacing the wires following this code

    Red = power

    White - neutral or heat

    Yellow - cooling

    Green - Fan

Orange - reversing valve on a heat pumpAny idea how to tell if a thermostat for my gas furnace needs replaced?digital or mercury filled?

    digital will click a relay

mercury will show a arc when you move the dial back and forthAny idea how to tell if a thermostat for my gas furnace needs replaced?thermostats will last for the life of the furnace and beyond. Most old ones like yours are just wound bi-metallic strips (a coil made of two different metals that expand and different rates). You can check it by placing a thermometer along side the thermostat and seeing if the furnace kicks on at the temperature at which it is set. It should continue to heat about 2 or 3 degrees above this set point before shutting off. If it does not kick on the contacts that the coil pushes together might be dirty or corroded.Any idea how to tell if a thermostat for my gas furnace needs replaced?First of all. we're talking about gas and that's nothing to go cheap on. in the end it could cost you everything and more! I'm a fair hand with heaters and the Government hired and flew me back in the 70's to install gas hot water heaters and heaters for the people in Johnstown Pa. when they had those three damns break and the water flooded out the town. I was a young teenager back then so when I say gas is something not to reckon with, you can pretty much take that to the bank. The fact that your system is 20 years old, there's a great chance that you should replace some of your system to be safe and have an experience tech to check it for you. In the mean time, you can get an external thermometer and see if it reads the same as your wall stat. This will tell you if your thermostat is still working. PS..A service call is cheaper than replacing your burnt down home or worst. even if money is tight. good luck and keep warm, :)Any idea how to tell if a thermostat for my gas furnace needs replaced?Raise the thermostat one degree above room temp.If you hear the furnace ignite OK if you can't hear it go to the basement and listen at the furnace if on OK.(room temp is the bottom indicator on the thermostat)Make sure all electrical switches are on that pertain to the furnace. also make sure you check the clean out at the base of the chimney.Remove any debris bird nest etc.normally mercury switches last they are sealed so the mercury makes the contact.

How do refrigerator/freezer combinations with dual-thermostat control work with regards to the pump?

The thermostat is only supposed to control the frequency at which the pump turns on and off.

How hard is it to replace the thermostat in a 2002 Mazda Protege?

My car keeps overheating and the coolant is full, I think I need a new thermostat? I know they are cheap, but how much does it cost to pay a shop to replace one?How hard is it to replace the thermostat in a 2002 Mazda Protege?super easy to fix, and i mean EASY

just look the lower hose going to the engine, release 2 10mm bolts and the thermostat is there, just remove the old thermostat and place the new one with a new oring gasket and screw back

  • How easy is it to install a thermostat in a house?

Our house has no thermostat, just a central heating/hot water timer switch. How easy would it be to have one installed, and how much is it likely to cost? How easy is it to install a thermostat in a house?Unfortunately many heating installers omit wall mounted thermostats as they think that thermostatic radiator valves are sufficient. They do still have a use, in that they can lower the overall temperature during periods of non occupation, which is much better than turning the heating completely off. It is a simple job to install one., it will require 2 or 3 core cable depending on the type selected. Normal stats need 3 core due to having an 'anticipator' in the stat. An electronic type normally only requires two core cable. I recommend a Honeywell CM67rf programmable thermostat for full control, these are available to operate wirelessly from anywhere in the house, which keeps the wiring to the vicinity of the existing controls.

http://europe.hbc.honeywell.com/productsHow easy is it to install a thermostat in a house?Normally the room thermostat would start the pump (tied in with the positioning of the zone valve which would depend on the hot water tank stat.

It is easy to fit if you can work out the electrical wiring, but it seems strange that you do not have one, presumably you are on a gravity system, in which case it may not be possible, would need to know more about your system first

You would pay anything from about 15 for a basic mechanical one, or 30-50 for a sophisticated programmable oneHow easy is it to install a thermostat in a house?odd, a heating system must have a tstat to work so there must be one somewhere.....usually not hard at all to replace...but still puzzled...there has to be one somewhere otherwise how does the HVAC turn on?How easy is it to install a thermostat in a house? It would be easy to run a thermostat cable from your boiler or programmer to a thermostat.

The connections are straight forward and I recommend an Electrician does the job for you.

As for the cost I cannot judge as it would depend on how much time it took and how much cable.

I suggest you get a couple of quotes from local companies. How easy is it to install a thermostat in a house?sounds like it just runs on a timer .suggest you get a professional in to install a thermostat preferably N.I.C.E.I.C. Registered Electrician, probably 100 or thereabouts including stat. How easy is it to install a thermostat in a house?Have you not thought of just putting thermostatic valves onto the radiators? As far as moderating the temperature of the house is concerned, they would be sufficient.

How much will it cost to replace a car thermostat?

My car has been overheating lately. I mean, the needle has been going over the line, into the red spot by the H. Any idea on how much a new thermostat would cost for a 97 Chevy Cavalier? How much will it cost to replace a car thermostat?this is something you can do yourself. less than 25 bucks.

follow the top radiator hose to the thermostat housing. remove two bolts and lift housing. remove old therm. noting how it sits in there. clean mounting surfaces on block and housing being careful not to let debris fall into hole. stuff a shop towel in there to keep trash out. remove towel dry surfaces. put new therm. in. apply small amount of gasket sealer to block, put gasket on apply sealer to other side of gasket. put housing on and replace bolts. cost of thermostat, gasket sealer, and gasket 20-25 dollars. or you can take it to a shop and pay between 50 and 75. if you want to try it yourself e-mail me and i'll send you free instructions from a manual. rgirg@yahoo.comHow much will it cost to replace a car thermostat?about $10 if you replace it yourselfHow much will it cost to replace a car thermostat?Under $100, installed. You can buy the parts to do it yourself for ~$15.How much will it cost to replace a car thermostat?this usually runs around 45-60 bucks if you have it done, you can do it your self for about 20 bucks counting a new gallon of anti freeze ,but it may not be the thermostat causing that too happen it can also be a weak water pump or a clogged radiator, there's many other things that will cause this too happen also, but changing the thermostat wont hurt it none, good luck with it.How much will it cost to replace a car thermostat?I agree with the two folks that gave you answers already. Check for several other things beside the thermostat. Check for condition of the hoses. Is the radiator completely full. Check for collapsed hoses. Check to make sure the fan is coming on when it gets that hot. Don't let it stay hot, turn on the heater fan to help dissipate some of the heat. How much will it cost to replace a car thermostat?to check the thermostat without being able to see it

take off the radiator cap, start the car, keep looking at the fluid in the radiator, it will be standing still, after about 5 minutes the water should then be circulating, if it's doing that then it's not the thermostat but something else. if it's not doing that then it probably is the thermostat.

    just a thought

What is the wiper in a thermostat? And how does it affect my electric bill?

I'm concerned about my heater coming on too much and making my electric bill too high. I'm sure it has something to do with the %26quot;wiper%26quot; inside the cover of the thermostat. But I don't know enough about it to know for sure. Can someone help me understand what the wiper is, and how it relates to my electric bill? What is the wiper in a thermostat? And how does it affect my electric bill?It could help to know the type of thermostat you have. I have never heard of a %26quot;wiper%26quot; in a thermostat but that doesn't mean there isn't something of that description in some of them. All thermostats work basically in the same manner... there's a sensor of some type that senses the ambient air temp, when it drops a certain number of degrees below the preset temp the unit sends a command to the furnace to come on. After the furnace heats up, the blower is tripped by a heat sensor in the furnace and operates until the ambient air temp reaches the preset limit. The unit then sends the command to the furnace to shut down. The blower continues to run until the temp in the furnace reaches the cut-off point then it shuts down. The sensors in modern digital thermostats are electronic whereas those in the older ones were mercury activated.

I doubt if your thermostat is responsible for making your energy bill too high, more than likely its the setting itself. If you want your furnace to operate less to save on your electric bill, I'd suggest that you reset the room temp to a lower setting. You'll be surprised how much you'll save by a lower setting even as little as two degrees.

How can I tell if I Need a new thermostat or to call a Tech.?

I can't get my thermostat to heat to the proper temp. I set it to 72, it heat to 60. A couple of week ago my husband ran into it. I have a feeling this may have affected it. The thermostat is a old honeywell with mercury. If it's out of balance, how could I tell and correct it?How can I tell if I Need a new thermostat or to call a Tech.?Those old thermostats work for ever! They are very dependable and rarely fail.

The problem is they MUST BE LEVEL! The mercury inside is liquid, and if it is not level it will not work right.

If it was bumped check to make sure it is level.

There is only one adjustment on it called a heat anticipator. It only sets how fast it calls for heat where it will either cycle a lot more when your a couple of degrees away from turning on, or turn on and off immediately everytime the temprature is not met or met.

With the cover off and a level you can fix it by adjusting it so it is level. How can I tell if I Need a new thermostat or to call a Tech.?R-W
