How to adjust a thermostat in a car?

I have a 1988 dodge daytona, and i dont know much about cars. I got home from the grocery today and heard a boiling noise, and smelled a burning smell. I opened the hood and saw smoke or steam pouring out of the anit-freeze resevoir. I opened it up and it was boiling. So i poured in some water, and that didnt help. I called a friend of mine who suggested i adjust the thermostat to allow more anitfreeze into the radiator. How do i do that? How to adjust a thermostat in a car?first off antifreeze is first placed into the radiator, then into the engine through the t-stat. Also you can't adjust a t-stat, you replace it with one that opens at a lower temperature. 195* is the factory setting on most cars, your only options are a 180* or 160* t-stat. First make sure your cooling fans are working before assuming therer is something wrong with the t-stat. Your fans are a big part in keeping your engine cool along with the coolant/radiator...How to adjust a thermostat in a car?a thermostat adjusts itself

if it is not opening properly then you will need to have it changed or you will destroy your engineHow to adjust a thermostat in a car?You don`t adjust it ,you replace itHow to adjust a thermostat in a car?I believe your friend was mentioning a very temporary fix for your vehicle's thermostat, that is until you can drive to the autoparts store or see a mechanic to have the factory thermostat replaced. All modern thermostats are automatic; a faulty one will eventually allow your engine to severely overheat and cause major mechanical damage. How to adjust a thermostat in a car?Your car has 3 thermostats, heater, radiator/engine and fan, I think your fan thermostat may be bad and not turning on when needed like driving in parking lots. this will make your radiator boil over into the reservoir when you shut it off, as it cools it should suck some water back into the radiator.

on some cars you can turn on the AC to get the fan on when needed. How to adjust a thermostat in a car?YOUR FRIEND IS BRAIN DEAD AND DON'T LET HIM WORK ON YOUR VEHICLE.

THE THERMOSTAT IS SELF ADJUSTING AND IF YOU SUSPECT THAT IT IS BAD THEN YOU REPLACE IT.
