How to convert a household thermostat for use on a portable space heater?

I know it's a bit overkill, but I only need to heat one room and space heaters are so inaccurate. I want to use a $30 standard external household thermostat to ensure a constant temperature in my room. Several people told me, %26quot;It can't be done%26quot;, but I know better. I have basic electrical and soldering skills. How to convert a household thermostat for use on a portable space heater? You can do this by using a residential electric heat thermostat. Match the amp rating for the t-stat to the amp draw of the heater. Go to Lowes, Ace, Tru-Value, or you local hdw store and tell them you need a %26quot;line voltage%26quot; t-stat. Some mfgrs. names to look for, White-Rogers, Honeywell,How to convert a household thermostat for use on a portable space heater? The thermostat is a low voltage control and unless you use a relay it cant be done, To use a relay get a 24 v class 2 ac transformer and a 110v/24v relay rated no less than 110v 15 amp

-on the transformer

connect one of the 24 terminals to R on the thermostat

connect the other 24 terminal to low voltage side of the relay

then connect W on the thermostat to the other low voltage side of the relay

connect 110v to transformer and normally closed side of relay

connect other normally closed side of relay to heater

connect common to the transformer and the heater.

Use # 18 wire for low voltage and # 10 wire for high voltage.

the common should not go to the relay.

Or just buy a high voltage programmable thermostat as it would be cheaper and saferHow to convert a household thermostat for use on a portable space heater?Cut the power cord and splice it hooking it up to a 120 thermostat for baseboard heat.
