Should i use timer or thermostat for heating?

Hi have just moved into an apartment with Central Heating System (having lived previously in an apartment with electric heaters) Had a Technician visit today showed me how to switch the heater on/off and also how to set the timer. Want to know which is the more energy efficient way to heat up the apartment... Should I have the heater on all the time and just adjust the thermostat or should I keep it on timer to come on every few hours. At the moment I have set it to come on for one hour in every 4 hours but needed some guidance.Should i use timer or thermostat for heating?A programmable thermostat would be best. You can set it so that you're not heating the apartment while you are at work and have the heat turn on a little before you get home.

If you are talking about the switch that selects between cool - off - heat, you can leave it on heat during the winter (and cool during the summer) and use the thermostat to control the temperature.

Using a timer requires constant monitoring of your temperature to avoid large temperature swings.Should i use timer or thermostat for heating? The timer is for when you go away from the house...You keep the temp very cool about 50 then right before you come home it may go up to 70 . You may want it cooler than 70 for overnight. That's when you use the thermostat ...but make sure when you go to work flip it back on timer.
