How do you know if its the heating element or the thermostat that is broken on a water heater?

No hot water today, we figure it must be either the thermostat or heating element...is there a way to check so we dont have to spend money on both? How do you know if its the heating element or the thermostat that is broken on a water heater?use a continuity tester on the heating element terminals. If it shows continuity, then the element is still good. For about $60 you can replace upper and lower elements and thermostats. If one went bad you don't know how far the others are behind it. You can test it and just replace the bad parts but I would reccomend replacing them all.

1. check the breaker, just to make sure but if it popped, usually something bad made it pop.

2. Check the reset button underneath the top cover, where the heating element is, should be a red button the size of a dime on the thermostat.

3. Test the elements, both of them to be safe.

4. If the elements are good, replace thermostats.

5. MAKE SURE, you leave the power off until the tank is full of water again. Run the hot water at a sink until water comes out. If you don't, you could burn out a brand new element and be right back at square one.How do you know if its the heating element or the thermostat that is broken on a water heater?Did you check you breaker in the breaker box? Sometimes a breaker will trip for one reason or another. Go to your main breaker box and find the breaker(s) for the hot water heater. Even if it looks like it is not tripped go ahead and shut it off and turn it back on. Sometimes breakers trip but you can't tell by the position of the breaker. Usually most hot water heaters have two elements. So if one burns out you still should harm warm water. Find the thermostat in the water heater and turn the temperature up. If water heater still doesn't work it could be the thermostat. Good luck!!How do you know if its the heating element or the thermostat that is broken on a water heater?if you have a voltage tester that will check for 220 volts you can make check easily...first make sure breaker is not tripped...turn it off and back on...go to heater listen for a hissing noise ...this is water heating up....no noise...take covers off of heater...remove insulation ...turn breakers off....remove plastic guards....try to reset red button on top thermostat....if it doesnt click then it wasnt tripped....turn breaker back on....check for power at reset button one line on each side...if you have power there check at top element for power...if heater is cold there should be power there if there isnt then thermostat bad ...if you have power element is bad....if heater is warm on top check for power on bottom element...if no power bad lower thermostat...if power bad element.......steps of heatings hot water ....1 top element comes on and heats to desired temp ..2 bottom element comes on heats to desired temp....3 heater waits for you to use water...4 you use water bottom element comes on...5 you contuine using water ..bottom element goes off top element comes on...6 top element stays on until desired temp is reached then shuts off...7 bottom element comes until desired temp is reached...heater waits for you to use more waterHow do you know if its the heating element or the thermostat that is broken on a water heater? It is most likely the heating element. Shut the power off to it and take the element out. I use a piece of heavy wire to rake the scales out of the bottom of the heater as the water is flowing out. If you don't the new one will probably burn out too. Generally, if the bottom one is burned out the top one needs replacing too, since you are doing them I like to do both. The hardware store will test them for you. I am sure that one you have the element out it will be obvious as to why it iis not working, usually you can see where it burned out, sometimes not so obvious on the top.How do you know if its the heating element or the thermostat that is broken on a water heater?Disconnect the wires from the element. Test element for continuity. If you get zero, the element is burned out. OR Take the element(s) to the parts house and have them test it for you.How do you know if its the heating element or the thermostat that is broken on a water heater?touch the hot water heater.. if its warm.. you know its the thermostat.. If its cold .. its the element.
