1. check the breaker, just to make sure but if it popped, usually something bad made it pop.
2. Check the reset button underneath the top cover, where the heating element is, should be a red button the size of a dime on the thermostat.
3. Test the elements, both of them to be safe.
4. If the elements are good, replace thermostats.
5. MAKE SURE, you leave the power off until the tank is full of water again. Run the hot water at a sink until water comes out. If you don't, you could burn out a brand new element and be right back at square one.How do you know if its the heating element or the thermostat that is broken on a water heater?Did you check you breaker in the breaker box? Sometimes a breaker will trip for one reason or another. Go to your main breaker box and find the breaker(s) for the hot water heater. Usually most hot water heaters have two elements. So if one burns out you still should harm warm water. Find the thermostat in the water heater and turn the temperature up. Shut the power off to it and take the element out. I use a piece of heavy wire to rake the scales out of the bottom of the heater as the water is flowing out. If you don't the new one will probably burn out too. Generally, if the bottom one is burned out the top one needs replacing too, since you are doing them I like to do both. The hardware store will test them for you.
