You want the spring to be down into the block. If you think it may be a faulty thermostat, take it out and boil it in a pot of water in the Kitchen, you will be able to see it open and close. If the thermostat does not open, then take it back and get a new one. If it does open, then you have a problem somewhere else. Check the coolant level. Take the radiator cap off and let the car heat up so it boils out through the radiator cap. Turn the car off and then add the neccessary fluid.
