My thermostat will not go as low as i want?

I have an older house and they thermostat is one of those round ones about 3 inches in diameter. I've heard that u an keep your house as low as 50 degrees without damaging pipes. So I'd like to keep it that low. The problem is that if i turn my thermostat as far down as it will go it only goes to 56 degrees. the markings go down to 50 so Im wondering is there a way to somehow adjust this. Maybe I should install a new thermostat. because it seems to me I should have the option to go down as low as 50 degrees. Right now I can go no lower that 56. How low does everyone else's thermostat go if they tried to set it to its lowest? My thermostat will not go as low as i want?THOUGH I FIND 50 TOO LOW, I KEEP MINE AT 60 DURING WINTER AND SAVE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY. MORE THAN LIKELY YOUR THERM. IS NOT LEVEL. THE OLD ONES WORKED ON A MERCURY SWITCH. IF YOUR NOT LEVEL WITHIT IT WILL THROW IT OFF.My thermostat will not go as low as i want?If you turn your thermostat down to 50 degrees, you will freeze. Your house shouldnt go lower than 60. Your house probably wont cool to 50 anyways if there is sufficient insulation, but I strongly encourage you not to go below 60. 60 will lower your bill tremendously!

Good Luck!My thermostat will not go as low as i want? Not sure about how low my thermostat goes....but....I always heard not to go lower than 55 degrees. My thermostat will not go as low as i want?you can re mount your t-stat, as the clock goes to the 11 o'clock, or 1 o'clock position, which ever way the temperature sensitive coil goes to to make it cooler, this will also throw off your temp reading for setting your t-stat, but should not affect your thermometer built in... you will have to set it to feel, which is what most people do, because thes gauges are not really that accurate!!

Good luckMy thermostat will not go as low as i want?it would be best to replace the stat with a digital it can be adjusted but it would throw all the other temps off as well
